Beschreibung
The contributions in this volume discuss a large variety of issues from the realm of Indo-European phonology in its broadest definition, stretching from minute phonetics to more abstract levels of phonemics and morphophonemics and centering upon all varieties of Indo-European, including the protolanguage and its recent pre-stages and, in effect, all of its post-stages till this day. Many of the chapters, written by specialists from thirteen countries all over the world, treat events of linguistic change in individual branches - thus there is a handsome collection on Celtic and another on Anatolian, two sectors that still continue to produce remarkable findings, but also Germanic, Indo-Iranian, Italic, Armenian and even Euphratic are represented, as are external relations between Indo-European as a whole and other language families.
Combined with the emphasis on the analysis of sounds, this study shows that the results of such investigations - and thus the general attitude towards genetic linguistics of the old Brugmannian brand - have, where successful, real legitimacy. The volume is thereby also a manifestation of the quest for realism in linguistic reconstruction which has come to be a hallmark of Indo-European studies as practised in Copenhagen.
