Beschreibung
The focus here is on the varied art expressions of the Bhanja dynasty of Ghumusara – which was one of three principalities in the present-day Kandhamal region of Orissa, East India. The Bhanjas occupied this state in the 9th century and continued to rule over it till 1835. As the Bhanja rajas never sought to expand their suzerainty, the size of their kingdom remained unchanged from the beginning of their rule to the end. They are known to have led a simple lifestyle, but were the great connoisseurs of art, architecture and literature.
This monograph presents the various art forms of the Ghumusara people. Combining an astonishing mass of sources with his extensive first-hand studies of myriad inscriptions, temples, mosques, churches, and other religious edifices, the author examines varied aspects of the Bhanjas' art and architecture, specially their rock-and-mural arts; besides the Jaina and Buddhist art, rock art caves and sculptures under the Bhanjas. Dr Padhi's discovery of mortar temples belonging to the medieval period is his significant contribution, says Professor Sadhu Charan Panda in the Foreword to the book.
